Free Checking - The Truth Revealed
Before you get all excited about free checking, take a look at the fine print. Banks will try to mislead you by saying the checking account is all free, but there are really fees hidden when you try to use your ATM or debit cards. The bank may promote free-checking even though you pay an annual fee on a debit card, or a fee when you use another bank's ATM. The bank can claim their checking account is free even if they're going to charge you to electronically access your account. Plus, if you bounce a check, you will end up paying double what you would pay for regular checking. So the trick is to use your account wisely. Keep your account at a bank that doesn't charge you for using it's machines or for accessing your account electronically. Don't use another bank's ATM machine, and withdraw all the cash you need weeks in advanced, so you don't make several ATM visits. If you follow these steps above, you will be able to maximize the "free" in your free-checking account. Nothing in life is ever free. Except for the high quality advice you get from Better Manage Money, of course!
