Saving Money - "Are You A Saver Or Spender?"

Saving money is one of the most important steps of better money management. Identify whether you are a Saver or a Spender. You can live your life as a spender and survive, but you have to work a little harder in the long run. If you are a saver, personal finance is a breeze for you, all you need to do now is assess your saving habits and separate your bad saving habits from your good saving habits.

Ask yourself questions like:

"Am I saving smart?"

"Could I be saving more money?"

"Am I saving in the right places?"

Once you assess these questions, you are ready to make the next move. You are ready to budget your finances and all your spending habits.

Spending Money Spenders have to work a little harder. If you are a spender, don't be ashamed. There are ways to live your life successfully while still a spender. This is especially evident in females (let's face it, girls love to shop). You can shop and save together with the proper balance.

We are part of a society that pushes spending and commerce. People are always enforcing that spending money is good. To be a spender and survive you must develop a discipline like no other. You mustn't be tempted to spend more than you can afford to. Therefore, you must spend your money on less expensive items.

Think carefully before spending your money on things you don't need:

"What will this item do for me?"

"Is it a necessity?"

"Can I afford it?"

Learn to spend your money on yourself and your future, and you will start to develop positive saving habits. Spend $25 a week on yourself by putting it in your savings account!

You will feel better about yourself from saving money, and you will start great savings habits. At the end of the year you will have an extra $1300 that you can spend as you please.

Here's an experiment that Savers AND Spenders can try. For 2 weeks, write a list of everything you're buying. Include food, clothes, gas, and all other items that you buy. Don't worry about including things like rent or any other routine expenses. This will give you and idea of where your money is going.

Practice all the budgeting tips on the Personal Budgeting page. You can conquer spending! Teach yourself the discipline you need however you can. If you think you have a spending addiction that is truly becoming a problem, Visit a Debtors Anonymous meeting in your area. They use a 12 step program similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, and many people have had success using it.

Your ultimate savings goal should be to save 10% of your total salary/income. Once you have reached this, and you are putting away 10% of every paycheck, slowly increase the percent you save. Start at 10%, then 20%, 25%. You'll be amazed at how saving money can really increase your total net worth!
